Bellairs Research Institute, Holetown, St James, Barbados
Friday, 24th April, to Friday, 1st May, 2020
COVID-19 Update: Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, this workshop did not take place as planned in April 2020. But we hope to see you all in the spring of 2022 in Barbados. Stay safe and healthy, and then we hopefully see each other in Barbados in 2022!
Overview
The workshop will be held from 24th April (Friday) to 1st May 2020 (Friday) at the Bellairs Research Institute on the island of Barbados.
Barbados is the most easterly island in the Caribbean. It is an island country in the Lesser Antilles, approximately 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length (north-south) and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width (east-west), covering an area of 432 km² (167 sq mi). The average temperatures range from 21 to 31°C (70 to 88°F). So bring suntan lotion, swimwear and light clothing!
Grantley Adams International Airport is the (international) airport of Barbados (IATA code: BGI), located in the south-east of the island. The airport has direct service to destinations in the United States (e.g., Miami, New York-JFK), Canada (Toronto-Pearson), Central America (Panama City) and Europe (e.g., London-Gatwick, Frankfurt), as well as within the Caribbean. A good overview can be found on the wikipedia page. Visitors from North America and most of Europe do not need a visa to visit Barbados.
The Bellairs Research Institute is located on the west coast of the island, next to the Folkestone Marine Park and in walking distance to Holetown. It is about a 40 minute taxi drive from the airport. Here is a map of Barbados that shows the location of the Bellairs Research Institute and the airport (apologies for the slightly outdated map, but it nicely marks the location of the institute — which can, of course, also be found on Google maps). Also, here is a photo gallery on the institute's website.
The Bellairs Research Institute offers a range of accommodation options, from an apartment or hotel-style twin rooms to basic dormitory-style rooms. Please see their website about the available room options; there is also a photo gallery showing some of the options. And here is a schematic map of the various buildings at the Bellairs Research Institute.
The cost of a room will depend on the room (the workshop falls into the high season). The room allocations are made by the organizer, so please do not contact the Bellairs staff to make room bookings. You will pay the Bellairs Research Institute directly during the workshop (by cash or credit card). Note that throughout Barbados, US currency is freely accepted at 2 Barbadian dollars (BDS) per US dollar. There are several banks and cash machines in Holetown, credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants (you might want to bring some US cash for the taxi ride from/to the airport).
You can buy lunch at local restaurants or at the shopping center a short walk from the Institute. Kitchen facilities with fridges are available at the institute, so we will probably organize the breakfast ourselves. Dinners will be served on site for US $26 per meal at around 6pm (just after sunset — so maybe after successfully observing the green flash from the beach next to the institute as the sun sets over the Caribbean Sea). In general, food prices in Barbados — and in particular in some of the posh west coast hotels close to the institute — are on the higher side (most foodstuff has to be imported).
The wireless network at the institute normally works very well, your room rate already includes WiFi usage. In Barbados, US power plugs are used (electricity is 110 volts/50 cycles, so US plugs and US voltage, but European frequency).
While the institute has a conference room, we will most likely use the outdoor common area (sheltered from rain) which has a primitive chalkboard, and we will also have a digital projector. There will be lots of opportunities and ample time for extensive discussions, we plan to have talks in the morning (say, 9am to noon) and evening (after dinner), while afternoons are free. Note that Friday is the official arrival (24th April), respectively departure (1st May) day, so we will not schedule any scientific talk Fridays.
